REA’s May Encore Auction: Historic Baseball Card Sets & Rare Memorabilia

Robert Edward Auctions has kicked off its highly anticipated May Encore auction, offering collectors and sports enthusiasts a chance to delve into a vast array of over 3,600 lots of sports collectibles. From iconic 1950s baseball card sets to unique and rare memorabilia pieces, this event is a treasure trove for fans looking to own a piece of sporting history.

Running for a span of ten days, this auction showcases items spanning the early years of baseball to more contemporary sports cards. Among the standout lots in the early stages of the auction is the T206 White Border Ty Cobb Bat Off Shoulder card from 1909-1911 featuring a rare Uzit back, as well as a Ty Cobb rookie card from the 1907 Wolverine News Postcard series.

Enthusiasts can also feast their eyes on vintage baseball card sets, including the well-preserved 1957 Topps Complete Set and the nearly complete 1958 Topps set. High-grade cards from the 1950s Bowman and Topps sets, such as rookie cards of baseball icons like Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and Sandy Koufax, are also up for grabs. Noteworthy is the complete set break of the iconic 1951 Bowman set, sure to enthrall collectors seeking a comprehensive collection.

In addition to cards, memorabilia pieces are also making waves in the auction. From a ticket stub from the 1957 NFL Championship Game to a rare 1920 Real Photo Postcard featuring the Harvard football team that graced the Rose Bowl stage, the historical significance of these items is palpable.

REA President Brian Dwyer is enthusiastic about the auction’s offerings, underlining the exceptional quality of the lots following the success of their previous spring sale, which raked in a whopping $15.4 million. He emphasized the considerable interest from avid collectors and the premium nature of the items at this auction, making it an event not to be missed for sports memorabilia aficionados.

For those eager to participate, bidders have until May 19 to place their bids on the REA website, with each item commencing at a bid of $10. The auction not only presents a prime opportunity for collectors to acquire rare and high-end sports memorabilia but also serves as a celebration of the rich history encapsulated in these collectibles. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a passionate sports fan, this auction promises a journey through time and a chance to own a piece of sporting heritage.
