Fanatics and Sotheby’s Sports Card Partnership Thrives

Fanatics and Sotheby’s have once again proven to be a dynamic duo in the sports card market, wrapping up their second successful collaborative auction with a whopping $2 million in sales from just 11 premium cards. The star of the show was a remarkable Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman Triple Logoman card, which commanded an impressive $600,000 price tag.

Dubbed the “Exquisite | Capsule Collection,” the auction exclusively featured top-tier cards from Upper Deck’s highly coveted Exquisite series. Among the highlights were a LeBron James 2003 Rookie Patch Autograph, a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Kobe Bryant Dual Logoman Autograph, and a Magic Johnson and Larry Bird Dual Logoman Patch Autograph.

The auction’s spotlight unmistakably shone on NBA legends, particularly Michael Jordan and LeBron James, emphasizing the enduring demand for iconic figures in the sports card collecting world. The aura of greatness surrounding these players was palpable, driving intense interest and bidding wars among passionate collectors.

This successful event comes on the heels of their first collaboration, “Holy Grails,” where a LeBron James Exquisite card fetched an impressive $432,000. In this auction, a different version of the same card soared even higher, reaching $456,000—an indicator of the continued value of premium sports cards despite market fluctuations. Just a few years ago, similar cards were changing hands for over $900,000, with some versions commanding prices exceeding $2 million in 2022.

The Exquisite line from Upper Deck has been a game-changer in the sports card industry, particularly with its introduction of rookie patch autographs, now considered essential for serious collectors. Brands like Panini’s National Treasures owe a debt to the groundbreaking approach pioneered by Karvin Cheung and his team in the early 2000s.
