REA’s February Auction Shatters Records

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) hit the home run in its recent February auction, setting new benchmarks and excitement in the vintage sports cards and memorabilia market. Surpassing expectations, the event recorded sales eclipsing $1.2 million, with a standout performance from a PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card that fetched an impressive $75,000.

The Honus Wagner card’s sale not only highlighted the auction but also set a new record for its version, showcasing the robust demand for rare vintage sports cards among passionate collectors. Another notable sale was the Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same series, graded PSA GOOD 2, which achieved a record-breaking sale price of $15,000, reiterating the enduring appeal of iconic players from baseball’s golden era.

The auction drew in a substantial number of registry builders and collectors, with a key attraction being the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Among these, the #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card stole the spotlight with a remarkable auction high of $19,200, setting a new price record for a non-Hall of Famer card from this set in its grade.

With a diverse array of 2,732 items up for bidding, REA presented a wide selection of collectibles to cater to varying tastes. Other top performers included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background PSA VG-EX 4 that commanded a price of $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig PSA EX-MT 6 that sold for $18,000, and a 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball PSA NM-MT 8 Complete Set, fetching $12,000, solidifying the auction’s success across different sports and eras.

REA’s President, Brian Dwyer, expressed satisfaction with the auction’s widespread appeal and the enthusiastic engagement from the collecting community. Looking ahead, Dwyer hinted at exciting prospects for REA’s upcoming events, mentioning the March Encore Auction set for March 14-24 and the Spring Catalog Auction starting on April 5, promising continued thrills for hobbyists and enthusiasts alike.

The triumph of REA’s February auction not only highlights the enduring allure and investment value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also lays the foundation for future events, offering a treasure trove of opportunities for collectors. With an eye towards the next auctions, REA cements its position as a premier platform in the sports collectibles market, setting the stage for more memorable moments and prized acquisitions in the realm of sports collecting.
